A bundle of cash was found from Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi's seat which he said was 'astonishing' but Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday flagged the recovery and ordered an investigation as per rules of the House.jili777

Cong MP Singhvi after 'recovery' of cash from his RS seat said that he heard of it for the first time and stated, "I find it bizarre that even on such issues politics is raised".

The currency was recovered from seat no. 222, which is allotted to Singhvi, on Thursday after the sitting of the House, Dhankar told media.

While Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the chairman should not have named the member without an investigation being completed, Leader of the House J P Nadda accused the opposition of showing eagerness on "some issues" while wanting to cover up other issues.

Jagdeep Dhankhar told media, "After adjournment of the House yesterday, a wad of currency notes was apparently recovered by security officials from seat no 222 presently allotted to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, elected from the state of Telangana".

He said as per practice, an investigation has been ordered.

The Chairman said the wad is of Rs. 500 notes, and appears to have 100 notes.

He also said it was not clear if the currency notes were real or fake.

"It was my duty and I'm obliged to inform the House. This is a routine anti-sabotage check which takes place," he said.

Dhankhar added that he was expecting someone would claim the currency notes, but no one has claimed it so far.

"Does it reflect the state of the economy that people can afford to forget it," he said.

Dhankhar also said that the step taken by him was 'minimal'.

What Did MP Abhishek Singhvi Say?

Calling the recovery of cash from his seat 'astonishing', Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Singhvi also claimed that he "Heard of it first time" after Dhankar flagged it.

In his defense, Singhvi further explained, "I carry one Rs 500 note when I go to Rajya Sabha; had left Parliament at 1.30 PM on Thursday".

Singhvi also said, "I find it bizarre that even on such issues politics is raised".

In a post on X Singhvi stated, "Heard of it first time now. Never heard of it till now! I carry one 500 rs note when I go to RS. First time heard of it. I reached inside house at 1257 pm yday and house rose at 1 pm; then I sat in canteen till 130 pm with Sh Ayodhya Rami Reddy then I left parl!"

According to NDTV, the MP also said, "Of course, there must be an inquiry. How can people come and put anything anywhere in any seat. It means that each of us must have a seat where the seat itself can be locked and the key can be carried home by the MP because everybody can then do things on the seat and make allegations about this."

Ruling Party Leaders React

Uproar was witnessed from both treasury and opposition benches over the issue.

"Why should there be objection to the name being taken? Chairman has pointed out seat number and member who occupies that, what is the problem with that," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

He said carrying bundles of notes in the House is not appropriate, adding that he agrees there should be a serious investigation.

According to Nadda, the matter was serious and the opposition and treasury benches should not be divided as it is an attack on the dignity of the House.

Taking a jibe at opposition members, he said, "On some issues you show eagerness, while you want to cover-up other issues."

Union Minister Piyush Goyal also said it is a serious issue. "... we don't know what else may be found on that side," he said. Without taking any names, Goyal accused the opposition of stalling Parliament over 'fake narratives".

"We have been seeing session after session, on fake narratives, fake views... the Leader of Opposition and the leaders of the immoral alliance have stalled the House," Goyal added.

"They base their narrative on foreign reports, and stall the House. Is there a conspiracy in this as well? People will have to worry about the kind of give and take that happens to forward the fake narrative," he said.
